Samaria Gorge Easy Way
If you want to get a taste of the majestic and spectacular Samaria Gorge but do not quite feel up to the challenge of doing the long hike, this is the right excursion for you!
Discover some of Crete's most important landmarks on this trip to the Southern Coast. Driving past quiet villages on the slopes of the imposing Psiloritis mountain you will reach the pretty port of Agia Galini where you have time for a refreshment or a first dip into the sea.
Next follows a visit to the archaeological site of Festos, Crete's second biggest Minoan city spread out in a spectacular hillside location with panoramic view of Southern Crete.
Then you continue further South through an almost biblical, bare landscape, until you reach the resort of Matala. Its history reaches back to ancient times when caves were carved into the soft coastal mountains above the beautiful beach. These were used by the legendary Matala hippies as alternative free housing – their presence and the free spirit of the 1960s is still present in today's village. Go with the flow and enjoy the vibe!
On your return trip, you will stop in the mountain village of Spili where you can have a stroll through its narrow lanes and perhaps buy some traditional souvenirs.
